What is RSV and who's at risk?

RSV is a virus which causes respiratory illness and is mainly spread through coughing and sneezing, and contact with an infected person or contaminated surface. It spreads very similar to flu and COVID and has similar symptoms including:

  • A runny nose
  • Sneezing and nasal congestion
  • A Cough
  • A fever

RSV infections can be particularly serious for babies and older adults, for most people the symptoms will get better on their own.

Common Questions About The RSV Vaccine

The vaccine is recommended for pregnant women from 28 weeks onwards and adults aged 75 to 79. Other factors can make someone eligible for the vaccine. If you’re unsure that you qualify for the vaccine speak to our pharmacy team.

The RSV vaccine is given as an injection into the upper arm. Pregnant women can receive it alongside other pregnancy vaccines, such as whooping cough and flu vaccines, but it’s best to have them as soon as they’re offered rather than waiting to have them at the same time. For older adults, it is not usually given at the same appointment as flu or COVID-19 vaccines, but can be administered with other vaccines like shingles and pneumococcal vaccines if deemed necessary by a healthcare professional.

Common side effects are mild and may include swelling or pain at the injection site, headache, and an aching body. These are usually nothing to be concerned about but if you’d like more information on potential side effects, please speak to our pharmacy team.

Older adults only need one dose, which should protect them for several years. Pregnant women are advised to receive the vaccine during each pregnancy to ensure each baby is protected for the first six months after birth.
